Rice

Rice is normally grown as an annual plant, although in tropical areas it can survive as a perennial and can produce a ratoon crop for up to 30 years. The rice plant can grow to 1–1.8 m (3.3–5.9 ft) tall, occasionally more depending on the variety and soil fertility. It has long, slender leaves 50–100 cm (20–39 in) long and 2–2.5 cm (0.79–0.98 in) broad. The small wind-pollinated flowers are produced in a branched arching to pendulous inflorescence 30–50 cm (12–20 in) long. The edible seed is a grain (caryopsis) 5–12 mm (0.20–0.47 in) long and 2–3 mm (0.079–0.12 in) thick.

Menthol Flakes / Powder

Menthol is generally obtained by chilling mint oil and subsequent centrifuging to separate out the menthol crystals. The process may be divided into two steps , firstly menthol flakes are produced by chilling mint oil and secondly menthol flakes mixed with mint oil again chilled to produce bold crystals of menthol. The total recovery of menthol in the first step is around 70% . The time cycle for first step is around 6-7 days. In the second step, menthol flakes mixed with certain proportion of mint oil kept under temperature control for about 25 days. The mother liquor (conc. Mint oil ) is a bye product and can be used again till decolourisation of oil occurs. Total recovery of bold menthol crystals is about 50 %

Menthol Crystals Large / Medium / Small

Manufactured by extraction of menthol from menthol oil. The oil is chilled to a temperature of -40°C to separate the menthol, which is later crystallized by slow cooling. These crystals are available in the following two grades and confirm to IP/BP/USP/JP/FCC-III standards.

If a liquid cools down slowly, it will turn into a crystal. The particles (atoms or small groups of atoms) line up in orderly rows, columns and layers. As the particles lose energy in the liquid, they become attached to the nearest edge of the crystal and so make the edge move into what was the liquid. You can see the "edges" of crystals move across the slide in the exhibit as the liquid menthol freezes.

Mentha Oil / Menthol Terpeless

India is the largest producer and exporter of menthe oil in the world. At present the major producers of mint oil in the world are India, China, Brazil and the US. Mentha arvensis is cultivated in India in the semi- temperate regions in the foothills of Himalayas in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The all-India area under mentha in the country is estimated at about 1,25,000 hectares.

By steam distillation and filtration, a golden yellow volatile oil is obtained. Leaves and flowering tops give the highest yield. About 50% of menthol can be separated out in crystalline form on cooling the oil. The remaining (dementholised) oil is used as peppermint oil. Manufacture of menthol from dementholised oil has been taken up on commercial scale by three or four firms in Bombay, West Bengal and Gujarat. There are several small distilleries in U.P also for the distillation of oil.

The natural oil yields on an average 40-50% menthol and 50-60% dementholised oil, which can be used both in confectionery and medicine in place of imported peppermint oil. Japanese mint oil is not distinguished from the peppermint oil in the Indian trade. The dementholised oil has been found to contain menthyl acetate (24.4%), free menthol (44.8%), menthone (24.6%) and hydrocarbons (6.2%). Among the hydrocarbons, alpha-pinene, a-1-limonene, carophyllene and cademene are present.
